How to Determine if You Need Enough Medical Assistance to Apply for Long Term Care Medicaid
As we age, we may need help with everyday activities or long-term care. Understanding the level of assistance you need can help determine whether you may qualify for Virginia Medicaid long-term care benefits.

1. You Need Help

As you age, you may find that you need help with things you used to do independently. Medicaid may help pay for certain long-term care services, but do you need enough assistance to qualify?

2. Contact the Appropriate Local Office

In Virginia, you can start by contacting your local Department of Social Services to ask about a Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) screening. Explain whether you are seeking care at home or in a nursing facility so that you can be directed to the appropriate screening process.

3. A Nurse or Other Qualified Professional Evaluates Your Needs

The screening includes an assessment of your need for long-term care services. Virginia uses the Uniform Assessment Instrument (UAI) as part of this process.

The assessment considers your ability to perform activities of daily living, including:

  • Dressing
  • Eating
  • Walking and moving around
  • Transferring between a bed, chair, or other surfaces
  • Toileting
  • Bathing and personal hygiene
Your medical condition, need for assistance, and other applicable criteria are also considered.

4. You Receive a Screening Determination

The screening helps determine whether you meet Virginia's care requirements for the long-term services being considered. The services available depend on the program and your circumstances.

A screening determination does not, by itself, establish financial eligibility for Medicaid or guarantee coverage of every service requested.

5. You Can Address Financial Eligibility

If you meet the applicable care requirements, you must also satisfy the income and resource rules for the Medicaid program involved.

If you are applying on your own, your local Department of Social Services can explain the application process and applicable requirements.

If you have assets to preserve, a spouse living at home, or questions about how your income and resources will be treated, you may want to consult an elder law attorney before making financial changes.

An attorney can help you understand the applicable rules, explore lawful planning options where available, and assist with the Medicaid application process.
